5 broken promises by Obama

March 4th, 2009

Normally I just ramble thoughts off from my own mind. Today I present an excellent column from Phil Kerpen….enjoy:

Obama’s Top Five Broken Promises

By Phil Kerpen
Director of Policy, Americans for Prosperity

Promise #5: Sunlight Before Signing

What he said:

“Too often bills are rushed through Congress and to the president before the public has the opportunity to review them. As president, Obama will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days.” (BarackObama.com campaign Web site)

What he did:

Obama signed the Lily Ledbetter bill, the SCHIP/cigarette tax hike, and the stimulus bill all with far less than a five-day waiting period that he promised–and continues to promise–on his campaign Web site.

Promise #4: Lobbyist Revolving Door

What he said:

“No political appointees in an Obama-Biden administration will be permitted to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years. And no political appointee will be able to lobby the executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the administration.” (BarackObama.com campaign Web site)

What he did:

Obama appointed Goldman Sachs lobbyists Mark Patterson chief of staff at the Treasury Department, where he directly oversees his former employer, a recipient of $10 billion of taxpayer funds from the TARP. Obama also appointed Raytheon lobbyist William Lynn to be an undersecretary of Defense.

Promise #3: No Tax Hikes on the Poor

What he said first:

“I can make a firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.” (September 12, 2008, Dover, N.H.)

What he did first:

By signing H.R. 2 into law, Obama happily signed onto the idea that smokers should pay for a $35 billion expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP). Cigarette taxes are going up 61 cents a pack starting April 1. Obama signed this bill knowing that the majority of smokers in the United States are working poor, and one in four lives below the federal poverty line.

What he said next:

“If your family earns less than $250,000 a year, you will not see your taxes increased a single dime. I repeat: not one single dime.” (February 24th, 2009, Address to a Joint Session of Congress)

What he did next:

Ignored the already-hiked cigarette tax at the time of the statement and then this restated promise was broken just two days later, when the Obama’s budget proposal was released. His new budget raises 45 percent of its revenue from energy taxes that will be paid by everyone who fills a gas tank, pays an electric bill, or buys anything that was grown, shipped, or manufactured.

Promise #2: Pork Barrel Earmark Reform

What he said:

“The system is broken. We can no longer accept a process that doles out earmarks based on a member of Congress’ seniority, rather than the merit of the project. We can no longer accept an earmarks process that has become so complicated to navigate that a municipality or non-profit group has to hire high-priced D.C. lobbyists to do it. And we can no longer accept an earmarks process in which many of the projects being funded fail to address the real needs of our country.”

(Statement on Earmarks, March 10, 2008)

What he is expected to do:

The White House has signaled that it intends to sign the $410 billion Omnibus Appropriations bill, which according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, contains 8,570 earmarks totaling $7.7 billion, including dozens of wasteful pork-barrel projects. These earmarks were awarded based on seniority, not on merit, and were mostly the result of high-priced lobbying, precisely the process that Obama promised to end. When the omnibus reaches his desk later this week or next week, we’ll find out if this is one more broken promise.

Promise #1: Big Government

OK, so this one is more of a statement than a promise, but it’s the biggest whopper of all.

What he said:

“Not because I believe in bigger government — I don’t.” (February 24, 2009, Joint Address to Congress)

What he did:

Obama proposed a budget that is breathtaking in scope, a blueprint for the biggest permanent expansion of government in history right on the heels of a sweeping trillion dollar stimulus plan. The budget lays the foundation for a government takeover of the health care and energy sectors and dramatically increasing spending across the board, other than defense weapons programs. Spending as a percentage of the economy under this budget will reach the historic level of 27.7 percent this year. The deficit as a percent of the economy, at 12.3 percent, is set to be the biggest in the entire history of the country outside of the four peak years of World War II. Anyone who offers such a budget can only fairly be described as a believer in bigger government.

Obama to sacrifice our security

March 3rd, 2009

I was watching the news this morning and saw that our President Barack Obama has sent a “secret” letter to Moscow and their President Dmitry Medvedev offering to scrap plans for a missile defense shield in Europe if Russia helps rein in Iran’s nuclear program.

I can not believe it. Since when is preventing a missile from hitting an American city or a “Friend of America” get offered up in a deal to stop a regime that supports terrorism, denies the holocaust took place, refuses to recognize Israel, and has helped kill American soldiers fighting for freedom in Iraq? The rational is that if we eliminate the threat of Iran building a nuke than there is no need for a missile defense system. HELLLOOOOO?!?!??!?!

This is appalling. Sure we need Russias help and would like nothing more than to develop a strong relationship with Russia but at what expense? I really am in shock over this. We wouldnt need a missile defense system? Russia is still under the control of Vladimir Putin and North Korea still has nukes and Pakistan is 1 violent overthrow of their government to having radical Islamists in complete control of a nuclear arsenal. We dont need a missile defense system?

I find it really sad that the current leadership of our nation is afraid to call a threat a threat and name names. Ronald Reagan looked Russia right in its eye and called it an Evil Empire. George H.W. Bush looked Saddam in his eye and called him what he was and that was an evil dictator. George W. Bush looked terrorism in the eye and called it was it was - EVIL and he also looked Iraq, Iran and North Korea in the eye and called them the Axis of Evil. This administration led by Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid are scared to even say the words “war on terror.”  They absolutely refuse to say it. They do not understand the threat of terrorism and they will only make the terrorists stronger by giving up things to appease the enemy. Worst of all? They are giving up the security of free people around the world.

Shame on you!

Why Obama and the Democrats failed us already…

February 23rd, 2009

In 2006 we were told by Nancy Pelosi and the new Democratic controlled Congress that they would get things done. They would work with Republicans for the good of the nation. They would end corruption once and for all. They would be transparent and work for the people. None of that took place and as a matter of fact it was the exact opposite. More corruption came out of the Democratic Party after 2006 than in recent years. Congress did nothing except name a bunch of Post Offices after a known KKK member and lion of the Democratic Party - Robert Byrd. The “Do-Nothing Congress” is amply named. And since 2006 our nation has gone straight down the toilet. I’m not blaming only Democrats. Republicans sold out their COnservative beliefs and spent, spent, spent, like their name was Bill Clinton. Bad move. Regardless this Congress has done NOTHING to bring the nation together. NOTHING.

Now comes Barack Obama. Straight from the heavens above! He promises to end corruption. He promises to be bi-partisan. He promises that no lobbyists will be in his cabinet. So what happens? He appoints lobbyists, he has members of his team resigning in disgrace because they are tax cheats, they put out this stimulus bill that will not stimulate ANYTHING and refuse to take in Republican ideas on it. They won so too bad for the Repubilcans! Way to be bi-partisan.

Does anyone care that the White House has taken the Census away from the Commerce Dept and moved it to the White House? Anyone even understand why they would do this? They are trying to change the electoral map! This is an outrage! Senator Gregg is going to be confirmed to be Sec. of Commerce and he’s a Republican so the White House takes away one of his most important jobs. This is a disgrace.

Is anyone aware of the wasteful spending in this new stimulus bill that is supposed create jobs and save the economy. They talk about creating these jobs in construction to fix bridges, roads and other infrastructure…wonderful. Those jobs wont last. When the job is done, you are laid off. Those are not permanant jobs. One of the items in the bill is an 88 million dollar plan to construct new schools in Milwaukee when there are 15 vacant schools already!!! WTF?!?

$150 million dollars to livestock insurance to cover honeybees and fresh fish??? Thats stimulus? That creates jobs for the middle class and lower class? This will help the economy? The worst thing is that Obama is walking around LYING to everyone and saying there is no pork and earmarks in this bill when there IS. How dare these people lie to us. They are stealing our money and telling us one thing while doing another. And the people walk around like zombies saying “OOOO Baaaaaa Maaaaa, OOOOO Baaaaaa MAAAAAA” WAKE UP ZOMBIES! They say this is an emergency and if we dont take action now then we will be up shits creek! Well than why are they loading up all this pork into the bill? Its like Al Gore saying the planet is dying and then adds to its death while asking the rest of us to stop. WTF is going on here???

$350 + million for education on sexually transmitted diseases. Great idea…how does that create jobs? How does this help the economy?

$650 million for coupons to help people switch to digital tv?!??!?! WTF?

$150 million for renovations to the Smithsonian. WTF!?!?!?

$70 million to help people to stop smoking. Great intentions but how does this help the economy?

Thats just a few of the items in the bill! This bill is almost $900 BILLION DOLLARS of guess who’s money? OURS! Not the Governments. Obama’s admin already has proven they dont pay taxes.

They say they are going to give tax cuts to everyone. Well what about the people who do not pay taxes? They will get a check in the mail for absolutely nothing. What is that? Sounds like WELFARE to me.

They cry about the deficit we are in but they want to spend their way out of it. How is that possible? The government needs to STOP SPENDING.

Oh and to top it all off, the Obama admin is going to cut Defense Spending by at least 10% and as much as 25%. We are in the middle of a war against terror. China and Russia are developing their weapons. Obama is taking apart ours. He is AGAINST the missile defense system that would prevent a missile from hitting a city in our nation. WTF?!?!!

To top it off they rushed this bill through and did not give anyone a chance to read it first! Its high time that the people of this nation know what is going into these bills before they are signed into law. It is unacceptable that these elected officials can insert nonsense into a bill without anyone knowing what was done.

Ok…let me stop….enough is enough. You get the point…or do you? I know a few of you do. But most of you dont. Obama lied. People were duped. I thought it would have taken a few years to expose this radical group of individuals who are taking over this country but as Charles Krauthamer said it only took a couple of weeks.

Obama has failed us already.

Moving toward a failed healthcare system

February 23rd, 2009

In a very little noticed provision of the proposed “stimulus” bill, the federal government would create the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research, which is the U.S. version of the U.K.’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Effectiveness (NICE).

As the Galen Institute explains, this new bureaucracy would literally change health care forever as it gives the government the ability to oversee health care treatments for every American. Worried about privacy? Don’t worry - this government body with $1.4B in spending won’t let the information leak out. The most worrisome concern, of course, is that if this body don’t like a particular drug or the cost of a drug for your treatment, you could be refused by your insurance company.

But don’t worry about the details - the government knows you better than you know yourself.  We should allow the government, who has failed us on every level take over the control of our health. GREAT IDEA OBAMA ZOMBIES! Thanks a lot.

What would it have taken for people to just place some old fashioned critical thought into what they were doing before they went into that voters booth and pulled the lever? Now, do not get me wrong, I was no fan of John McCain but he was obviously the lesser of 2 evils this time around. So now, as we all move on in age we have to be more concerned about our health than ever before. Who will we turn to when we need help with our health? The Government!???!?! Please….I can not even go to the DMV without a problem and now they will control the healthcare?

I cant afford a house so I should pay for someone elses who cant either?

February 20th, 2009

Please someone tell me that I am not bugging out here. Is this true? The money that they are going to use to help the people with their mortgages is coming out of taxpayer dollars. I am a taxpayer. I purposely have not tried to purchase a house because I knew I could not afford it yet. I have lived in a 1 bedroom apartment with my wife and daughter. There is not much room here. My daughters toys are everywhere. But I did not just jump at the chance to get a house because I knew I would be given a loan.

So now I have to allow my taxes to be used to pay for someone else who KNEW they could not afford a house and for whatever reason they want to cry about they purchased a house. They’ll say they were lied to or the bank duped them. I say it was the Community Re-Investment Act that started this whole problem but that should be ignored by everyone right?

Today they will take my money and use it to help someone else pay for their house. Where is my bailout? What if I get behind in my rent? Will I be bailed out? I work hard for a living. I give back to my community. I help at-risk youth get off the streets in NYC and into skill building programs to help give them options for a better future. If things get tough for me, the government will not help me. I know this for a fact. And you wanna know what? I dont want their help. I was once poor and living in a really bad situation. I got myself out of it by personal responsibility and accountability. Its not a tough concept. Someone should teach the current leadership of our government something about it!

I am disgusted.

NYU Students Occupy Cafeteria

February 20th, 2009

http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/94282/nyu-students-protest-lack-of-disclosure/Default.aspx

These young people, who have been trained by their hippie bleeding heart liberal parents, have barracaided themselves in the school cafeteria here in NYC. They are demanding the University to give up information about the finances the school has including the salaries of the Professors! They also want more scholarships for people from Gaza.

Here is a simple solution:

Tear gas, cops in riot gear, and permanent expulsion from school….after a month or 2 in jail.

Losers.

Top 3 Liberal-leaning groups that you’d think would vote conservative

January 6th, 2009

Here’s my personal Top 3 list of groups that you’d expect them to vote conservative yet seem to vote predominantly liberal.  Now of course there are exceptions to all of these, and I didn’t exactly do a scientific study, it’s really just an observation, but enough of the disclaimer – onward:

3.  Punk Rockers.

What’s the whole message of Punk Rock anyway?  DIY!  We don’t need your F***ing help, we’ll do it ourselves.  Sounds like liberty and free market economics to me.  Know how many 70s punks are now business owners, executives, and well over the $65,000 per year mark? Lots.  I think the whole Punk=Liberal thing really stems from the “Moral Majority” attacks from the 80s & Nancy Regan etc.  However PMRC and music censorship efforts have almost always been driven from the left.  I would bet that most punks really are Libertarian, if they took the time to think about it.  Oh, and for a group that prides itself on not following the crowd or doing the popular thing – there sure were a lot of Obama votes there…

2.  Blacks.

Yup, I said it.  Now I know how historic the election of Barrack Obama was so I’ll leave that out.  Let’s just talk in general.  Most blacks are church goers and live by at least somewhat Christian standards, want equal treatment regardless of race, voted in droves against gay marriage, believe in a strong national defense and personal liberty.  Yet the numbers there are staggering in favor of liberal candidates.  I understand this is a result of blacks creating a common community to stand vs. early racism and I can certainly respect that but I think the Liberal politicians are now merely exploiting that by pretending to offer escape from racism and unequal treatment, while actually perpetuating it.  Isn’t it time to think as an individual?

1.  Jews.

This one baffles me the most.  One would think that after the holocaust Jews would be in strong support of the 2nd amendment and the average Jewish family would want to own as many guns as possible.  Also, if Jews are so industrious and wealth-magnets like the stereotype would lead us to believe, wouldn’t that also land them on the free market, low income tax side of an election?  Still, year after year, somewhere around 85% of Jews vote democrat.  Why?  Best I can figure it’s because someone, somewhere, at sometime projected that extreme right wing = fascist.  Now I’m not sure how you connect the dots and get from free market, individual liberty and low taxes over to white supremacy, secret police and kill the Jews, but someone did, and apparently it keeps them voting democrat every year.

PS I generally don’t apologize so I wont.  I’m not trying to offend anyone with this post, in fact, I identify with two of these groups, can you guess which ones?

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

December 30th, 2008

And yes, happy other holidays as well.

Just a quick update from the Friends of America team, we’re taking a break until the new year so we won’t be updating the site much.  There are quite a few breaking stories like the Blago appointment, the RNC chair race, the controversial satire CD and many more so we’ll defer to our hard working friends at Right Wing News, American Thinker and of course Michelle Malkin for keeping the posts rolling during this holiday season.

You can still reach our board member Shok_trauma via twitter.

And we still want Joey’s Bridge story to stay our top article for a while longer. (thanks to all who sent letters of support,  he’s loving home school so far)

Joey’s Bridge: a story of ambition in the new America

December 22nd, 2008

One of our most precious guarantees as Americans is the “pursuit” of happiness: the striving, the effort, the longing to succeed and reaching deep inside until we find the will somewhow to perservere.  The passion for greatness;  for reward, be it material or not; the undying ambition to move forward - this is the foundation on which America is built.  That is how we got here, and that is how we’ll continue.

The following is a very serious letter from Mike S, a Friends of America contributor, and personal friend.  It’s not even my child and it makes me angry every time I read it.  In fact I’ve had to take several breaks while editing for that very reason.  It frighteningly demonstrates how the very thing that makes us great, our ambition, is not only being attacked with regularity, but being gradually squeezed out of us.

My son, Joseph, is enrolled in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program in the Clark County School district; specifically, he’s in the 3rd grade at Jo Mackey Academy of Leadership and Global Communication.  This is a magnet school, designed to attract the more intelligent kids from in and around the Las Vegas area. Also, because of the way it’s designed, it also serves the neighborhood of which it’s a part. It did, however, offer the promise of decent education for the students, which our neighborhood school lacked, so we enrolled him there.
Near the end of September, we were informed that each third grader was to build a bridge and bring it in to class to share.  While I will admit that my family is a bunch of hyper-competitive over-achievers, the goal of this exercise was, to my mind, to learn about bridges.

Apparently, however, it was more a lesson in how to blend in with the crowd.

I had Joey research the different types of bridges that he could make. I had him make a determination as to which bridge he would like to make, and write a couple of paragraphs about why he wanted to use this type of bridge, and the advantages it has over other types. He chose a cable-stay bridge, like the ones in Boston, Dallas, and Rio. (They’re my favorite kind, too, incidentally.) So, paper written up, we drew out a plan. We figured out how tall we wanted our support pylons to be. We determined, mathematically, how long the cable would need to be that would support the platform. We decided what we were going to use as caissons. We determined the appropriate width and length of the bridge platform. A lot of work went into the planning. We went to Home Depot, purchased the appropriate hardware (3″ PVC pipe for the caissons, 3/4″ PVC pipe for the pylons, 1/4″ plastic-coated steel cable for the support cables, and a 4′ long board for the span. We carefully measured where to put the holes, drilled them, and fastened the cables through them. (What you see in the picture is one continuous cable, threaded like a shoelace, supporting the full weight of the bridge. It can hold several times its own weight, too.)

Here’s a kid who’s passionate about what he does, and takes pride in his work - and a Dad that’s committed to fostering the very best from his son.  That’s quality Father-son time right there, working on the science project together.  But if you believe “it takes a village” or that “fathers are only a coincidence” then this sort of thing infuriates you.

Joseph took his bridge to school, obvously quite proud of his creation.

His teacher then declared that his bridge was “overbuilt,” and that he “did not follow the spirit of the project.”

What exactly was the “spirit” of the project?  I thought it was to build a bridge?

She asked the rest of the class if they thought Joey’s bridge was overbuilt, and they, whose bridges were suddenly completely overshadowed, agreed with her.

Reminds me of this incident earlier this year.

Joey started to cry, and agreed that it was overbuilt, so that the ridicule would stop.

That’s a heart-breaker right there: another dangerous young mind, fixed by the education system…

She gave him low marks on his bridge project, while giving a high grade to a kid who made a simple arch bridge out of Lego. (And, yes, it’s exactly what you’re thinking. Four small rows of Lego, then two rows spanning across to another column of Lego, 4 high. Total time to completion: 6 minutes if he had tried to color-coordinate them, which he didn’t.)

She then proclaimed that she was going to keep “the good one” to show the parents - a couple of popsicle sticks glued together to make the type of bridge you’d see when someone piles wood across a creek. It was most upsetting.

Joey, of course, was completely crushed. None of those kids learned anything about building bridges. None of them learned to really take pride in something, and see it to completion, and really put thought into it. And the teacher was the guiltiest of all.

We can add all sorts of commentary about this, but we’re going to let Mike sum it up:

I have discussed this with his guidance counselor. She admitted, directly, that the schools are more a form of babysitting for the children, and that mediocrity is what is taught. The kids who excel get squashed to keep them from getting too far ahead of the dumb ones.

They’re all taught just to go along and get along, because sheep are much easier to control than thinking individuals. The idiots in the room set the pace for everyone else, instead of being allowed to fail on their merits, and the smart kids are punished. (I remind you - this was in the GATE class, not just run-of-the-mill 3rd grade. The kids in these classes are all in 5-9th grade reading levels, 4-10th grade math levels, and are very, very smart. They are being kept back because some of the children of the crack whores residents in that neighborhood get to send their kids to that school, and they don’t differentiate out the classes by ability.)

This story, unlike many other, will have a happy ending, because of a Dad who is a man not a pansy, a true American, and most of all who’s an actual Dad that cares about his kid(s) and wants what’s best for them, not what makes them feel good right now, but what’s actually best.

Joey is starting homeschooling with Nevada Virtual Academy as of January 5th.

Public school is nothing more than a feeding ground for leftist, feel-good propaganda (it doesn’t matter if you learn anything, the only important thing is that you *think* you’re special!), where they turn children into mindless cattle.

Joeys Bridge

Joey's Bridge

(Comment from MikeS: Sorry the picture is of such poor quality. My camera phone doesn’t take great snaps. You can see, however, that it’s quite the technological marvel, based off of the cable-stay model. It’s 4 feet long, to give you an idea of scale.)

[Comment from Friends of America admin:  This is just the type of issue that the Friends of America was established to respond to; however this event took place prior to the founding of this organization.

Our typical response would be to contact the school principal and teacher and demand an explanation, as well as contacting local and national media to attract attention to this situation.

If you have, or know someone who has, a similar experience, please contact the Friends of America.  You can email directly dan @ thefriendsofamerica.org or direct message our spokesman via twitter]

Auto bailout: Exasperated? Yeah, us too. (beware thrown shoes)

December 15th, 2008

So after all the calls to congress, late night senate sessions, more calls to congress, being on hold & disconnected at the white house, it’s come to this.

Yeah, we’re pretty frustrated.  We did everything legal.  We called, we petitioned our representatives and some of them even listened and we voted to NOT provide tax money for failing car companies.

And the president says, that’s ok boys I got yer back.

Too angry to type, this editor has thrown his shoes…and pen…and keys…and laptop-no wait, that was expensive.

Several questions have come up:

Did the Whitehouse tell anyone that “if congress doesn’t help, we will”?
If so, did the UAW walk away from negotiations knowing that they’d get paid anyway?

I happen to watch some video of GWB2 durring the 2000 primaries & election - wow what a different man that was.  It made me really sad acutally to contrast that guy with the now bought and beaten man we know as President.  He’s been given one more chance to stand on what’s left of his conservative principles…and he won’t do it.

I really miss the GWB I voted for in 2000.  I really do, I liked that guy.  Not as much as people seem to like Obama, but pretty close.  I had really high hopes for him and our nation after that election.

Got a bit off-topic but my point is, that here’s a final chance (and not many people get one) for redemption of his principles - I wish he’d take it.

NOTE:  This editor does not hate domestic cars, or UAW workers, and wants no one to be fired right before Christmas.  HOWEVER - the right principles and the right decision, are always the right principles and the right decision.
