United We Stand; Divided We Fall
How do we get to the tomorrow we envision for our kids and our grandkids when we see America changing in ways we do not think is best for the future?
The Federal Government is expanding and stronger than ever before. The Government has spent so much taxpayer dollars and our economy is tanking. Congress has done nothing for the last 2 years and the 5 years before could have done so much and they failed. The Republican controlled Congress lost their Conservative ways and now we’ve lost complete control of our government. When you have no power you have very little chance to get the ideals and values you believe in pushed.
What are the values I am talking about? Liberty; Personal Responsibility and Accountability; Fiscal Responsibility; Family; Limited Government; Free Enterprise; Property Rights; Peace through Strength. These are some of the values of a Conservative and the ones that are very important to me as an individual.
So what is the answer?
One thing that can be done is we can actively work toward creating a campaign to raise awareness regarding the elected officials in Congress who are up for re-election in 2010 and push for them to be voted out. What would that make us though? Is that rooting for failure? If I am campaigning today in 2008 to have the Democratic Congress voted out in 2010 am I rooting for my Government to fail? And if yes, why would I root for the failure of my country? Wouldn’t that make me no better than the deplorable and divisive people who rooted for failure for 7+ years under President George W. Bush.
For those 7 years I found myself engaged in battle after battle with people who had what we all call “Bush Derangement Syndrome.” So many people I encountered wanted Bush to fail. If he fails, Republicans look bad and lose future elections. Sound familiar? Yes it does. This is what happened. Now, truth be told, George W. Bush did make some mistakes. Some would say a lot of mistakes. I wouldn’t. I would say his biggest mistakes came in the form of cronyism. He appointed people to positions based on his friendship with them. That may have been good for him, but hindsight shows it was not good for the country. To the credit of our current Commander in Chief, we have not had a terrorist attack on our homeland in well over 2000 days and for that every single American owes President Bush a debt of gratitude. Of course the left would never say thank you to Bush so we’ll have to leave the class to those who have some.
I always believe that you should speak out against your elected officials when you need to but at the same time actively rooting for failure is wrong. It made me sick to my stomach hearing time and time again about the “failed policies of the Bush administration” from our friends on the left. The biggest “failed policy” they talk about is the Iraq war. The same war the Democrats voted to give President Bush the power to wage. The same Democrats who spoke and bragged in front of Congress how they voted to remove Saddam Hussein and how he was finally captured. Then things got tough in Iraq. The same group who planned the death of 3000 Americans on our home soil showed up in Iraq to wage war against our troops who were bringing peace and Democracy to the Iraqi people. All of a sudden it was not popular to support the war in Iraq. We lost a lot of soldiers and so many more were injured. The going got tough and the Democrats got going. They decided to wage a cold war against President Bush at home with the hopes of weakening his Presidency and causing a major change in the control of our Government at home all the while our soldiers were fighting a war overseas. Members of Congress including people like John Murtha, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin and even President-Elect Obama said some heinous things about our troops. Hillary Clinton and Tom Lantos called General Petraeus a liar when he came home to report about the progress in Iraq and James Clyborn said if the great General had good news it would be bad news for Democrats. The economic crisis we see today was caused in large part to the mortgage debacle that took place. Congressman Barney Frank and Senator Chris Dodd could have prevented this or at least warned everyone about it but they said things in complete contradiction to the situation. They said everything was fine while Republicans, going against Free Enterprise and Capitalism ideals wanted to implement oversight. It was killed in Congress. Meanwhile the same Democrats are blaming this economic issue on President Bush and “his failed policies.” This way of thinking and acting is divisive and it was not good for the country. It appeared to me that the most important thing for the leaders of the Democratic Party was their own personal power and agenda.
The day after President Bush took office in 2000 a large number of people in America delegitimized Bush’s Presidency. He stole the election they claimed which is beyond idiocy and all it would take is a simple research effort on the law to answer any question regarding that election.
Then came 9/11/01; the worst day in our nation’s history. We pulled together. The flag was flying from coast to coast. I’ve always been a proud American but during this period of mourning I saw how the nation came together and my pride grew to levels I did not think existed. How long did that last though? Our nation that was unified became divided quicker than a hiccup. Our entire government has failed its people. Not just the Democrats. Not just the Republicans. Not just Congress. Not just President Bush. ALL OF THEM.
So here we are today. Our Government is controlled by the very people who I believe undermined President Bush time and time again in the war against radical Islam but they are in power. All I have been thinking about is how we can get 2010’s elections to go our way. What can we do to raise awareness to the terrible policies these folks will enact and impose on us? We can not allow the Fairness Doctrine to be brought back. We can not let them raise taxes which would cause more unemployment and higher prices for the very goods we need on a daily basis. We can not let them cut our military and defense spending by at least 25%. We must stop them from eliminating the missile defense system that protects our country from enemies launching war heads at our cities! We have to do something! We need to stop this move toward socialism, kissing up to the United Nations and we must stop this move toward tyranny where the Government is telling us all how to live! We have to do something NOW!
You know what I was becoming? Do you see it? President-Elect Obama has not even taken office yet and I am thinking of ways to get this current leadership out of office instead of thinking of ways to move our country forward. I have become the very type of person that I would call deplorable. I am really disgusted with myself. The success of our nation is the most important thing right now. Too many people are suffering out there and many more will join them soon enough. While I waste time in trying to think of ways to make sure we raise awareness toward the failures of the current leadership in Congress, I have not even given them a chance to be led by a new leader. What if they succeed in solving a lot of the current problems? Should I be rooting against that?
It is no secret I did not vote for Barack Obama but as of January 20th he will be our President and the Commander in Chief of our military. He will have my support and I will pray for his success. I will give this current Government a chance to succeed instead of having a seed of negativity planted in my head rooting for failure so we can re-take Congress. I can not believe I have become the very type of person I have railed against the last 7 years; Shame on me. We must give this current government a chance to succeed. When we disagree with policy we use our right to speak out against it. We contact our local officials, send letters to our Senators, we volunteer and get our ideas and voices heard in local offices of our elected representatives. We do not root for failure. That is not who I am. That is not the Conservative way. That is not what the Friends of America should be about. What kind of friend roots for failure? We need to succeed and for the next 4 years our message should be positive not negative. We can spread the word of our values and get more people aware of them and show them that these values are probably something they can relate to as well.
One of the greatest Presidents of our nation’s history Ronald Reagan said “America is a shining city upon a hill whose beacon light guides freedom-loving people everywhere. Just because the Government has changed and those who I disagree with are in control does not mean we are any less of that great nation. We always were and always will be the greatest nation on the planet and it has nothing to do with the government. It is because of the values, beliefs, and actions of Americans that make us the greatest.
It is Thanksgiving week as I write this and it made me think of a quote by another great President we had, a liberal Democrat, who by today’s standards would be pretty moderate said “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” – John F. Kennedy.
Instead of planning the failure of our Congress, I am now planning the success of the Conservative movement with hope that this current government can get the country back on track. Based on their policies I do not think they can but I also have faith in President-Elect Obama to govern the way our nation needs him to govern. I will not lie to you and tell you that I do not have disgust for the left wing of the Democratic Party. I do. But I believe President-Elect Obama will not fall to the pressures of the far left and he will be a balance that understands that the symbol of our nation is the Bald Eagle and like the Eagle our country has two wings – a left one and a right one and like the beautiful Bald Eagle, we need both to fly.
